The Washington Spirit entered the Queens Classic against NJ/NY Gotham FC on a three-game winning run, but suffered an all-too-familiar outcome as that streak broke Wednesday night.

Rose Lavelle — scorer of the only goal in last year's NWSL Championship final between these sides — produced a spectacular lob from a low angle late in the first half, giving Gotham a 1-0 win before 42,175 fans at Citi Field.

With smoke from Canadian wildfires wafting into New York City just as temperatures soared into the upper 90s on Wednesday, the conditions dominated the pre-match build-up. In the end, NWSL — following league policy to check the air quality multiple times before kickoff — opted for two hydration breaks per half, the last step before a possible postponement or cancellation would have been considered.

Beyond that, the Spirit got off to a nervy start. Jaedyn Shaw and Esther González both had promising looks in the opening seven minutes, though Sandy MacIver was up to the challenge both times.

Washington's first raid forward nearly paid off, as Trinity Rodman's 13th-minute cutback from the endline deflected off of Shaw to wrong-foot Ann-Katrin Berger. The longtime Germany goalkeeper recovered to prevent a corner, and though Rodman tried to lob her second chance towards Rosemonde Kouassi, the Bats escaped unscathed.

Rodman later did well to send Gabby Carle in at an angle in the 28th minute, but the Canada fullback's shot went right into the hands of Berger.

After a series of stoppages for injury and the additional hydration break, Gotham found the opener through a stunner from Lavelle.

The hosts pressed the Spirit into a series of progressively worse passes, with Jaelin Howell eventually nicking the ball off of Hal Hershfelt. Lavelle then feinted away from Tara Rudd before playing a no-look chip from an acute angle, somehow floating her effort over MacIver and into the corner.

The visitors created a few worries for Gotham in response. In particular, Andi Sullivan's shot from distance (after stepping high to win the ball off of Shaw) clipped a Gotham foot on the way in, with Berger having to react late to recover and make the stop.

The second half began with few chances in either direction, though missed interception in the 59th minute from Guro Reiten nearly let the Spirit in. Kouassi squared for Sofia Cantore, whose shot was deflected over the bar by the retreating Gotham defense.

Sam Kerr made her much-ballyhooed return to the NWSL in the 64th minute, and within seconds forced MacIver into a kick save from an acute angle.

Washington had been finding it hard going to get any closer to an equalizer, but a typical Rudd adventure upfield nearly provoked a goal. Rudd combined with Rodman along the right flank to open Gotham's defense, but Rodman's chip to the back post for substitute Claudia Martínez was inches too high.

Leicy Santos had suffered through a quiet night by her standards, but snapped a shot towards the bottom corner in stoppage time after Rebeca Bernal's tackle kept a play alive. As had been the case on Washington's attempts on goal, though, Berger was ready to dive left and secure the ball.

The Spirit went even closer as Deb Abiodun chipped Martínez into a great position, but Berger's early read allowed her to block the shot. Gift Monday's follow-up towards an open net appeared to strike Emily Sonnett, and an eventual, audacious long-range attempt from Santos in the aftermath forced Berger into easily her best save of the night.

That was the final drama, as a pronounced effort to claim a late equalizer amounted to no further looks. In having a three-game winning streak snapped, the Spirit (8-3-3) missed the chance to leap to the top of the NWSL standings. Their week-plus road odyssey wraps up this Sunday, when they will face the expansion Boston Legacy for the first time ever. Kickoff at Centreville Bank Stadium in Providence, RI is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET, with Green Line Soccer set to cover the match on site.
