Washington Spirit back to winning ways after 1-0 victory over Bay FC: Match report
The Spirit broke a four-game winless run thanks in part to Paige Metayer's first-half goal.
The Washington Spirit got a much-needed three points Sunday, seeing out a 1-0 victory over Bay FC at Audi Field to snap a four-game run without a win.
Paige Metayer scored the game's only goal just before halftime, hustling to make sure a Trinity Rodman shot off the crossbar didn't go for naught. New Spirit signings MĂ©lissa Bethi and Monique Ngock made their debuts, while a worrying injury situation potentially grew worse as Ashley Hatch and Kate Wiesner both departed with suspected ankle sprains.
There was a near-repeat of last week's wobbly start, as Andi Sullivan's backpass, under pressure from Bay, went between targets. Alex Pfeiffer seized on the loose ball, but her shot was fought off by Sandy MacIver.
Washington were lacking some fluency early, but a flowing transition move in the 24th minute nearly opened the scoring. Sofia Cantore found Metayer in space on the overlap, Rodman eventually came across to help facilitate, but the Italy forward's 19-yard shot zipped inches wide.
Three minutes later, Rodman could only produce a tame shot from the same distance after dribbling past two Bay defenders as the Spirit began to find openings in the visitors' pressing scheme.
Bay hadn't threatened in some time, but produced a slick 38th-minute move of their own that ended with Pfeiffer's angled shot calling MacIver into action. They went even closer three minutes later, with Taylor Huff's low cross into the six-yard box finding Karlie Lema. Bay's leading scorer had beaten Tara Rudd to the spot, but skewed her finish up and over MacIver, kissing the crossbar before falling on the roof of the net.
It hadn't been a brilliant half, but the Spirit broke the deadlock deep in first-half stoppage time. Cantore checked back into the midfield to flick the ball into Rodman's path, and the U.S. women's national team forward rounded Sydney Collins to charge into the box.
Rodman's shot from an acute angle beat Jordan Silkowitz, hit the underside of the bar, and bounced tantalizingly on the line. Metayer, sprinting in late, made sure to settle the issue, beating Jenna Nighswonger to bundle the ball over the line.

Pfeiffer continued to be Bay's biggest threat, crashing the goal after MacIver couldn't hold Claire Hutton's long-range strike in the 56th minute. From essentially the endline, the youngster tried to stab a shot over the Spirit goalkeeper, but ended up poking the ball high.
The Spirit were under their first sustained spell of Bay pressure of the day, but came inches from padding their lead. Good hold-up play from Cantore helped set the impressive Bethi up in a pocket of space to send Tamara Bolt through on goal. The Brazilian shot low past Silkowitz, but could only find the outside netting.
Pfeiffer had another tricky run broken up as the game began to get stretched, followed a minute later by a floating Cristian Girelli header that forced MacIver to save at full stretch.
The Spirit, while showing some instincts to manage the final minutes with possession, still created late chances for a second goal. Substitute Gift Monday tried to take on six Bay defenders looking to seal the deal in the 85th minute, only for her low strike to be blocked behind for a corner.
Despite Bay's efforts to create a last-gasp equalizer, the goalmouth action came at the other end. Bethi nearly marked her debut with a stoppage-time strike, only for Silkowitz to make her fourth save of the night.
Breaking their winless run pushes the Spirit (12-4-6) back up to 2nd place in the standings, five points off NWSL Shield leaders NJ/NY Gotham FC. They face a difficult test next Sunday, as they head to the Pacific coast to take on the Portland Thorns. Kickoff at Providence Park is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET.
