Washington Spirit, Angel City FC fight to eventful 1-1 draw: Match report
Trinity Rodman's 10th goal of 2026 was only enough for the Spirit to secure one point in LA.
The Washington Spirit and Angel City FC have a long history of wild games, and while Sunday's 1-1 draw at BMO Stadium doesn't fit on the surface, a tense, often end-to-end battle featuring 33 shots certainly felt normal for these sides.
Trinity Rodman stayed in the Golden Boot conversation with her 10th goal of the season, but Ally Sentnor — who had been denied an earlier goal by VAR — struck late with a thunderbolt to ensure an even split of the points.
While the result wasn't ideal, there was at least one unalloyed positive, as Ashley Hatch returned from maternity leave in what was her first appearance for the Spirit since May 23, 2025, coming on in the game's final stages.
A nervy Spirit start saw the visitors scrambling multiple times in the first five minutes, with Claire Emslie and Prisca Chilufya both firing shots narrowly over the bar. Chilufya went close a second time in the 13th minute, firing narrowly wide from inside the six-yard box after Angel City again got into a dangerous position.
It had been a rough start, but the Spirit reminded Angel City of the threat they can pose. Hal Hershfelt had time to turn at midfield after Rebeca Bernal won a tackle, and delivered a dime into space for Trinity Rodman. The U.S. women's national team forward came in from an angle, but saw her powerful strike denied by the post.
Hershfelt nearly got on the scoresheet herself in the 29th minute, pursuing a long ball from Tara Rudd that caught the Angel City backline out. The midfielder, playing in a more attacking role on the night, barged Emily Sams out of the way but Angelina Anderson produced a stellar save to keep the game scoreless.
Washington had seemed to find their footing, but Angel City's first attack in some time seemed to result in a goal for the hosts. Gisele Thompson blocked a Rudd clearance, and the Spirit never quite recovered. Chilufya's initial cross went too long, but Sentnor kept the sequence alive, dancing past Rebeca Bernal before zipping a left-footed shot past Sandy MacIver.
However, amid all the chaos, Chilufya's forearm blocked an Élisabeth Tsé header, and referee Alyssa Pennington — having initially given the goal — chalked it off after quick check at the VAR monitor.
Amid some tactical shifts, the Spirit began the second half with fewer mistakes in and out of possession, though Hershfelt's 58th-minute shot going high was the only end product by the hour mark.
The increased stability was welcome, and the breakthrough finally arrived in the 65th minute. Tsé won a crucial tackle as the Spirit nearly turned the ball over amid an aggressive Angel City counter-press, with Rudd — who had stepped high earlier in the sequence — collecting the ball near midfield.
Tsé's play bypassed nearly the entire Angel City lineup, and Rudd quickly fed Rodman to charge forward. In a one-on-one with Emily Sams and plenty of space to work with, Rodman got into the area before roofing her shot past Anderson.

Tsé made another critical intervention in the 76th minute to deny Ary Borges an open shot from the doorstep as Angel City increasingly pushed numbers forward in pursuit of an equalizer.
Esme Morgan and Rudd then followed their Canadian teammate's lead to defuse a major threat in the 81st minute. The former slid in to break up a potential sitter for Taylor Suarez, while the latter had to lunge to block Chilufya's follow-up from close range. MacIver then had to leap to her right to make a strong save, denying Sentnor on a typical long-range strike as the pressure increased.
Washington were stuck defending deep without a break, and the Angel City equalizer arrived via Sentnor. A long ball forward found her in a pocket in the 85th minute, and the 22-year-old cut across the Spirit back line before launching a swerving rocket into the upper corner.

The goal was late, but in typical fashion between these sides, stoppage time came with numerous looks. Hatch created two chances before having a late shot go wide, while the hosts — buoyed by their own returning star striker, with Sydney Leroux making her first appearance since 2024 — threatened with multiple crosses. The customary, extremely late goal was the only missing ingredient.
With the draw, the Spirit (11-4-5) remain in second place in the NWSL, but are now six points back of NJ/NY Gotham FC. Washington will look to get back to winning ways in one week's time, with the Orlando Pride visiting Audi Field next Sunday, August 16. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET.
