Washington Spirit can't solve San Diego Wave in 1-0 home loss: Match report

The Washington Spirit once again found the San Diego Wave a frustrating foe, falling 1-0 at Audi Field on a rain-soaked Sunday evening.

Lia Godfrey pounced on a loose ball inside the box after an hour for the game's only goal, breaking a three-game winning streak and ending the Spirit's hold on first place.

With rain that occasionally shifted into a downpour, the early going was treacherous for Washington. Sandy MacIver had to make two tricky saves in the 16th minute, while the Spirit's only real foray upfield ended with Sandra Paños claiming a loose ball before Sofia Cantore could get a touch.

The Spirit — growing in confidence in possession after initial struggles to press the Wave into giveaways — had their best looks of the first 45 minutes just before halftime. A Paige Metayer pass intended for Trinity Rodman was deflected and pinballed around before falling invitingly for Cantore, but the Italy forward's rushed shot made for a simple enough save for Paños. Moments later, Rebeca Bernal struck with power from an angle, but again Paños was up to the task.

San Diego threatened within the first seconds of the first half after Ludmila escaped her markers, but MacIver batted her shot from the Spirit right away, and the rebound bounced through the box untouched. Another Wave attack caused a prolonged nervy moment inside the six-yard box, but ultimately the hosts came away unscathed.

The visitors were largely on the front foot, but Tara Rudd turned a 55th-minute interception into a line-breaking pass to Rodman in space. The U.S. women's national team forward surged towards the Wave box, but her shot bent wide with Paños flat-footed. Rudd was the provider again two minutes later, this time finding Bernal for a venomous strike that clipped the crossbar before going into the stands.

However, a mix-up on the hour mark undid the Spirit's progress. Cantore's back-pass fell out of Hal Hershfelt's reach, and though the forward sprinted back to attempt to win the ball back, but Trinity Byars did just enough for the play to stay alive. Suddenly, the ball rolled into Godfrey's path, with the rookie poking a shot past MacIver.

The Spirit pushed to equalize, but found it very difficult to gain any purchase. Between San Diego's defensive structure and some wayward passes in crucial moments, there were numerous "almost" moments than threats at the Wave goal.

Finally in second-half stoppage time, the pressure began to tell. Rodman's cross to the back post saw Perle Morroni barely get a touch to prevent Gabby Carle's crashing run from getting a reward.

Washington threw everything at one last chance, but multiple corners amounted to nothing as the Spirit fell to defeat at home for the first time since the season opener.

With the loss, the Spirit (11-3-4) fall to second place in the NWSL standings, trailing NJ/NY Gotham FC by a single point. Washington will look to rebound in their next game, a home clash next Saturday with the North Carolina Courage. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. ET.
