Washington Spirit fall 1-0 to Orlando Pride in third straight home loss: Match report

The Washington Spirit have seemingly lost their touch of late, with the visiting Orlando Pride striking early and then hanging on for dear life to hand the hosts a 1-0 loss.

Haley McCutcheon buried a 3rd-minute chance for Orlando, who then survived long periods of Spirit pressure, and three shots hitting the woodwork. The defeat marked the third straight for Washington at Audi Field, the longest such streak since the club began playing at the venue.

Washington got off to a nightmare start, as a giveaway at midfield gifted Orlando an even-numbers counter. Barbra Banda stripped Élisabeth Tsé of the ball and surged into the Spirit half before eventually squaring across the box for the onrushing McCutchon.

The Pride captain finished with confidence, handing the visitors the lead after just three minutes.

The Spirit came much closer in the 12th minute, with a set-piece routine leading to shots hitting both posts. Sofia Cantore flicked a Kate Wiesner free kick into the middle, but once the ball came back to her, the Italian took aim only to bend her shot off the inside of the post. The rebound bounced to Tamara Bolt, who fired a follow-up to the opposite post only to see her shot rattle off the frame.

Esme Morgan produced an immense block two minutes later, recovering to deny Banda after a simple ball over the top appeared to put one of the NWSL's most dangerous players in behind.

The Spirit offered another dead-ball threat in the 43rd minute, as Trinity Rodman's lob back across goal picked out Tara Rudd. However, Washington's captain could only power her header over the bar. Just before halftime, Kouassi got free along the right, but her low effort was neither a shot inside the post nor a pass to crashing runners, bobbling wide.

With the Spirit dominating the ball, the hosts offered more purpose to start the second half. Multiple sequences, including one in which Rodman fought through two tackles only to have her shot blocked, worried the Pride.

Rodman cut the ball back for Gift Monday in the 69th minute in another dangerous foray forward, only for Rafaelle to provide another block as the visitors were unable to find any lengthy time on the ball.

Still, Washington couldn't find the breakthrough, and in fact had to lean on Sandy MacIver as Jacquie Ovalle played a one-two with Summer Yates before hammering a shot on frame that the Scotland no. 1 denied.

A stoppage-time corner from the Spirit nearly saw a remarkable equalizer, as Gift Monday's flick-on from Morgan's delivery fell to Ashley Hatch. The veteran forward, making her first at home since going on maternity leave in May 2025, glanced the ball over Morché only to see it clip the bar and go over.

Two minutes later, another corner found Paige Metayer, who was denied by an excellent Morché save. Monday then saw her header it the outside netting as Washington finally put the Orlando goal under siege, but only found frustration in the end.

Winless in four games and having lost three straight at home, the Spirit (11-4-6) could well finish Sunday nine points back of NWSL Shield leaders NJ/NY Gotham FC, who play Angel City FC later on Sunday. They'll look to break out of this midseason slump next Sunday at Audi Field, with visiting the District. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m. ET.
