Cantore wondergoal gives Washington Spirit 1-0 win over Denver Summit: Match report

The Washington Spirit found themselves in another tactical battle with the Denver Summit, but were able to solve the puzzle with a touch of Sofia Cantore magic in a 1-0 win.

Cantore's latest wondergoal set the Spirit on their way, while Trinity Rodman — who would force Denver into three yellow cards on the night — picked up her fifth assist of the season. The U.S. women's national team star is on an MVP-level tear at the moment, with 8 goals and 5 assists in her last 11 NWSL appearances.

Rodman pounced after Hal Hershfelt produced an early turnover in the Denver half, skipping a near-post shot just wide in the third minute.

It was a strong start from Washington, but a 12th-minute giveaway nearly spoiled it. Yazmeen Ryan picked up possession deep in the Spirit half, and struck a 20-yard effort that beat Sandy MacIver, only to shave the crossbar on its way out.

The game settled in as both teams showed discipline in their out-of-possession shapes to make positive play difficult. Hershfelt, causing trouble as a pressing sort of no. 10 to start, kept play moving quickly after the Spirit won a 50/50 in the 38th minute. Her pass sent Paige Metayer into space along the right, but her cutback shot couldn't beat Abby Smith, and Sofia Cantore couldn't quite get a foot onto the resulting loose ball.

The half's final moments saw Metayer and Hershfelt causing the Summit more trouble, but after the former sliced and diced past two opponents in the corner, the latter's long-range shot attempt skewed wide.

Washington exerted more control as the second half got going, with multiple moments of pressure not quite turning into a good chance. Finally, the breakthrough arrived in the 61st minute, and came from the product of some dogged Spirit defending.

Leicy Santos, fresh into the match, did well to win the ball off of Ryan to prevent a mazy run from turning into more of a threat. Santos, Kate Wiesner, and Rebeca Bernal combined to escape the Summit press, with the Mexico captain sending Rodman into acres of space down the flank.

From there, Rodman shaped to attack the space, but surprised the visitors by playing an early square ball for Cantore. The Italy forward feinted one way and then the other before unleashing a swerving, seemingly impossible shot that picked out the top corner.

Denver didn't crumble, with Lindsey Heaps initially seeming to have won a penalty after a collision with Tara Rudd and Bernal. Referee Elton Garcia gave the spot kick initially, but was summoned to the VAR monitor and chalked the decision off after review.

The Summit conjured up a dangerous dead ball a minute into stoppage time, with Ryan tumbling just outside the penalty area. Heaps shaped to take it, but her 19-yard effort smacked off the Spirit wall. In the follow-up chaos, Ally Brazier's attempt to hook the ball past MacIver, but Washington could breathe a sigh of relief as the effort flashed across the face of goal before going wide.

Denver went even closer in the final seconds, with Brazier this time looping a desperate shot that went off the bar, but the Spirit had just enough in the tank to make the final clearance.

Washington (10-3-3) maintained their place atop the NWSL standings with what was their fifth win in six matches. They have one more midweek game left on the regular-season schedule, with a trip to the Wasatch Front to face the Utah Royals Wednesday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 9 p.m. ET.
