Washington Spirit sign Tanzania forward Clara Luvanga from Al-Nassr

The Washington Spirit made a late addition to their roster, announcing that Tanzania forward Clara Luvanga has joined the club after a transfer from Al-Nassr of the Saudi Women's Premier League.

Beyond a Spirit release announcing that the move did involve a fee paid to Al-Nassr, terms were not announced. Luvanga's contract runs through the 2029 NWSL season.

"I am very excited to join the Washington Spirit and to take on this new challenge in the NWSL," said Luvanga in a team press release. "I know I am arriving with the season already underway, but I'm really excited to play in a new league and a new country."

"Clara adds an exciting new dimension to our attack as we head towards the playoffs," added Spirit sporting director James Hocken. "Despite her young age, she has demonstrated the ability to score goals in different ways and has the profile to be very successful in this league."

The 21-year-old forward was signed before the FIFA transfer window closed on September 7. Luvanga was not part of Tanzania's squad at the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), but has appeared for the senior national team in the past. Her career has been spent as a forward, largely on the left or in the middle.

As a teenager, Luvanga played briefly for Logroño United (then DUX Logroño) in the Spanish second tier before moving to Al-Nassr in the Saudi Women's Premier League in October 2024. There, she was seemingly unstoppable, scoring 54 goals. Al-Nassr won three league championships in that span, while Luvanga won the SWPL's 2025-26 Golden Boot by scoring 24 times in just 14 matches.

Luvanga is not expected to be available for Sunday's home match against the Boston Legacy as she awaits her U.S. visa and international transfer certificate. In the meantime, her SWPL highlight reel from this past season is long:

Roster ramifications

The move comes in the aftermath of recent roster changes. Rebeca Bernal's transfer to Manchester United opened up a roster spot, not to mention some unknown amount of space under the NWSL's byzantine Transfer Fee Threshold.

Kate Wiesner has been added to the 45-day injured list after suffering a fractured ankle against Bay FC. Deb Abiodun was briefly given the same status, but earlier this week the Spirit opted to place her on the Season-Ending Injury list, noting that the Nigeria midfielder will need surgery to address a hip issue.

That leaves Adrián González with a smaller roster, at least for now. Abiodun does not occupy roster space or an international spot while she's on the SEI list, which is what has opened the door to Luvanga being added to the roster straight away, taking the total eligible players available up to 24. While the international spot situation will require solutions after the season, it won't be an issue in the coming weeks.

As for the remaining open roster spots, Wiesner be eligible to return in mid-October, though the Spirit can extend the 45-day designation (think of it as a minimum, rather than a guarantee) should she need more time. Meanwhile, Casey Krueger has been training with the Spirit for the last couple of weeks, though her timeline for being activated from maternity leave remains an unknown.

In all likelihood, those two would take up the final roster places left available (NWSL rules cap squads at 26 players). Aubrey Kingsbury, who gave birth in July, is believed to be further from completing her return-to-play work, with 2027 a more realistic target.

The Spirit could also fill the open roster spots with replacement players, but with the transfer window closing in the U.S., those players would need to be free agents willing to take a short-term replacement deal over options in other countries. With the window still open in places like France, Italy, Norway, Spain, Portugal, Japan, and Mexico, that's a hard sell.
