D.C. United, LAFC go toe-to-toe in 0-0 draw: Match report

D.C. United showed that, despite an inconsistent 2026 season, they have what it takes to stand toe-to-toe with one of MLS's stronger sides, playing LAFC evenly throughout what ended as an entertaining 0-0 draw at a lively Audi Field on Saturday.

Despite playing without leading scorer Tai Baribo (injury) and first-choice defender Silvan Hefti (suspension), United never looked out of their depth against Son Heung-min, Denis Bouanga, and the rest of the Western Conference power's side.

D.C., set up in a surprise 4-1-4-1 with João Peglow playing a central role, started brightly. The Brazilian's diving header tested Hugo Lloris in the opening seconds, signaling a more attacking intent than the Black-and-Red often show against MLS's stronger sides.

A lovely move broke LAFC open in the 16th minute, but Keisuke Kurokawa's overlapping run arrived too early. The Japanese fullback roofed a shot past Hugo Lloris, but the offside flag correctly arrived a moment later.

While the visitors began to bring a threat of their own, finding Son Heung-min more and more often, the next major threat again came from the hosts. United's initial 32nd-minute foray broke down as Kimito Nono was tackled, but Matti Peltola's long-range follow-up ramped up off an LAFC defender, forcing Lloris backpedal to keep the game scoreless.

LAFC remained dangerous though, with Son drifting inside to feed Denis Bouanga's run in the 36th minute. Bouanga slashed across Kurokawa, but Sean Johnson reacted in time to block his near-post shot. Johnson had to be even better two minutes later, leaping right to slap away Mathieu Choinière's effort after Son broke D.C.'s offside trap.

Moments into the second half, Nathan Ordaz seemed to come back to haunt his old side, zipping a low cutback towards Jackson Hopkins. The United homegrown product pivoted to shoot, but Lloris showed he still has sharp reflexes, tipping the effort over the bar.

Ordaz was at it again in the 53rd minute, but Munteanu could only push an effort wide as the hosts continued to show enterprise.

The many South Korea and Tottenham Hotspur fans out to see Son thought they had their moment on the hour, as Johnson's punch from a Bouanga corner didn't have proper height and distance. Son powered a volley on frame, but Andre Dozzell was on hand to head the ball off the line.

At the other end, Munteanu's 23-yard strike moments afterward saw Lloris barely tip the shot wide, while Brandon Servania's falling 71st-minute bid for an opener rolled a yard wide.

The chances kept coming at both ends. Peglow's looping volley had Lloris worried, only to float wide, while Lucas Bartlett produced a critical block to deny Son after an 83rd-minute cutback from Yevhen Cheberko.

United had to survive some very late pressure, but ultimately were well worth their point on the night. Still, a ninth draw in 14 matches leaves United (5-10-7) right on the edge of the Eastern Conference playoff line, sitting in 10th place on goal difference behind Toronto FC.

United faces another tough assignment next time out, as they travel to play FC Cincinnati next Saturday, September 5. Kickoff at TQL Stadium is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.
