D.C. United battle heat, Houston Dynamo in 1-1 road draw: Match report

D.C. United went into the World Cup break on a string of draws, and despite nearly two months between matches, that run continued with a 1-1 road draw against the Houston Dynamo.

Héctor Herrera opened the scoring late in the first half, but in oppressively hot conditions, Tai Baribo pounced for a scrappy 78th-minute equalizer as United extended their road unbeaten streak to five games.

On a night where Tropical Storm Bertha lurked along the Gulf coast and temperatures hovered in the upper 90s, the conditions were punishing even by Houston-in-July standards. The Dynamo provided the initial pressure, though Jackson Hopkins' low-angle volley from a sixth-minute João Peglow delivery was the first shot of note either way.

Hopkins did well to carve out a 13th-minute chance to zip a cross into the goalmouth, but Louis Munteanu couldn't reach the ball after tangling with Lucas Halter. Munteanu pleaded for a penalty, much to Halter's objections, but ultimately VAR didn't call referee Victor Rivas to the monitor after a check.

In truth, the pace of play was being slowed by the heat. Sean Johnson's first save didn't come until the 25th minute, a straightforward stop on Mateusz Bogusz. At the other end, Hopkins was dangerous again, this time teeing Munteanu up for a 35th-minute strike that had plenty of power, but flew a yard high.

However, an area of strength all season became a weakness for United, who fell behind in the 40th minute on a rare concession from a set piece. Jack McGlynn's free kick from deep on the right flank was initially headed away by Lucas Bartlett, but his contact only guided the ball directly to Héctor Herrera. The former Mexico midfielder opted to steer the ball towards the near post, and though Johnson seemed to make contact, the effort nevertheless crept over the line.

United hadn't been broken down from open play in the first half, but were ripped apart barely a minute into the second half. Artur and McGlynn combined up the middle before freeing Bogusz, who moved past Sean Nealis — appearing for the first time in over three months due to injury after what Apple TV called a "twinge" in the warm-up for Kye Rowles — with ease. It looked like a second goal was inevitable, but an excellent Johnson save kept the visitors in the match.

D.C.'s task got tougher in the 53rd minute, as Hopkins — who appeared to injure his ankle minutes earlier after a tricky landing — ended up requiring a substitution.

The man who replaced him, Matti Peltola, was quickly involved on a sequence that ended with Munteanu's attempted curler being blocked. Little else bubbled up afterwards though, and René Weiler gave a debut to Nathan Ordaz amid a 67th-minute triple substitution.

A second-half hydration break saw United legend Ben Olsen bring two defensively-oriented substitutes on to shore up the lead, only for the visitors to break through immediately upon the restart.

Kurokawa's long throw-in was met by the Dynamo's Artur, who could only head the ball backwards while falling. Ordaz showed the grit that helped him succeed with LAFC, diving across Guilherme to cushion a header across goal where Baribo stooped to nod the ball across the line for his team-leading ninth goal of the season.

The goal set up a potentially dramatic finish, but in truth the heat of the night meant that neither time had the energy left to be precise and find that last big chance.

While the draw means United (4-7-5) have now gone five without a win, they retained their hold on the ninth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference after a sixth draw in nine outings. The post-World Cup flurry of matches continues this Saturday as Toronto FC visits Audi Field. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET.
