D.C. United at FC Cincinnati postponed after lengthy weather delay
After nearly 2.5 hours and amid unrelenting storms, United's weekend plans washed out.
D.C. United was set to face FC Cincinnati Saturday night, but the Eastern Conference clash at TQL Stadium has been officially postponed due to lightning in the region.
United communications confirmed the postponement to Green Line Soccer shortly after 10 p.m. ET. Details on when the match will take place have yet to be settled, and will be announced by the clubs at some future point.
Storms moved in shortly before warm-ups were set to begin, with lightning forcing fans and both teams to wait it out inside. While initially looking like a single, powerful cell, the storms just kept coming. At 8:51 p.m., FC Cincinnati club reporter Carter Chapley posted to social media that goalkeepers had taken the field for warm-ups. However, just a few minutes later, more lightning triggered another delay, and the area was hit with intense rain to boot.
Finally, nearly two-and-a-half hours after the scheduled kickoff time, it was determined that the game couldn't be played Saturday night.
"Due to pitch conditions and player safety, tonight's match has been postponed. The match will be rescheduled for a later date," read an announcement on the TQL Stadium jumbotron:
No match tonight.

It is believed to be unlikely that United will stay in Ohio to play on Sunday, with both sides having their next match coming up on Wednesday, though no official sources have commented on that front. The Black-and-Red are set to host the Columbus Crew at Audi Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET, and as of now the forecast from Weather Underground gives a mere 5% chance of rain.
