D.C. United entered the week needing at least one win over FC Cincinnati, and arguably may have needed a full six points. Instead, a 2-0 loss at Audi Field made it two defeats from the rare MLS back-t0-back, pushing the Black-and-Red's playoff hopes to the edge.

A first-half rocket from MVP candidate Evander was all the visitors needed to get the win, while the Brazilian playmaker set up Tom Barlow for Cincinnati's second early in the second half. Despite the urgency of the occasion and an opponent that had conceded 71 goals coming into Saturday's match, United had next to nothing to offer in response.

Perhaps given the importance of three points to both sides, the match got off to the kind of cagey, cautious start that neither team has been good at forcing on opponents when they've needed to.

There had barely been a shot attempt at either end in the first half-hour before Cincinnati took the lead in familiar fashion. A fairly unremarkable push into the United half saw Pavel Bucha square to Evander some 25 yards from goal.

The Brazilian has produced so many highlight-reel goals since coming to MLS, and did so again in the 35th minute, quickly getting a knuckling, powerful shot off that seemed to freeze Sean Johnson on its way into the top corner.

United offered a lively — albeit brief— response, with Brandon Servania worrying Cincinnati goalkeeper Roman Celentano with two shots from distance that flew over the crossbar. It turned out to be their best spell of the night.

D.C.'s tactics — particularly after Jackson Hopkins departed in the first half due to what appeared to be an ankle injury — were a pretty straightforward attempt to pump crosses into the box. A Cincinnati side that has struggled defending in the air all season seemed vulnerable, but United's service was consistently poor.

Matters got worse for the hosts early in the second half, with Barlow popping up to double Cincinnati's lead. United had been on the attack, but after a half-clearance their attempt to counter-press didn't quite pan out.

Bucha scooped the ball forward to Evander, who had enough space to move up the half-space without particularly pushing the pace. Eventually the opening he wanted showed itself, with the Cincinnati captain slipping Barlow in for a simple close-range finish.

Kévin Denkey had a good look to further United's misery just three minutes later, but sliced his half-volley high after good work from Evander teed him up from 14 yards.

United were trying to find some kind of foothold in the game, but in truth Cincinnati's transition attacks were more dangerous. Denkey was denied by Kye Rowles in the 78th minute, with the Australian providing an excellent sliding block to keep D.C. from falling further behind.

In the end, United's grim push for anything on the night never got better than a brief hope that VAR might award a penalty, but in reality that protest involved grasping at straws.

Speaking of long-shot situations, a fifth loss in seven games leaves United (7-12-12) with only the slimmest of hopes of ending a playoff appearance drought that extends back to 2019. The stretch run stays busy for the Black-and-Red, who Wednesday travel to face Toronto FC in a pivotal match for both teams' postseason hopes. Kickoff at BMO Field is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.
