Despite chances, D.C. United can't solve Charlotte FC in 2-1 defeat: Match report

D.C. United were in fairly serious need of a win Saturday night, but a hard-luck 90 minutes against Charlotte FC ended with a 2-1 loss despite the hosts creating the bulk of the chances.

With trips to face the Vancouver Whitecaps and Inter Miami looming on the schedule, capitalizing on a three-game homestand was paramount. Instead, the Black-and-Red took just four points, leaving their postseason hopes in doubt.

Ashley Westwood and Allan Saint-Maximin scored high degree-of-difficulty goals for the visitors, while United — producing nearly four times as much in the way of expected goals — could only get on the scoreboard through a Lucas Bartlett header.

The early exchanges were punctuated by few actual looks, though Sean Johnson had to do well to bat away an angled attempt from Liel Abada on a 17th-minute counter-attack. United responded from a dead ball, with Louis Munteanu's chip from the endline finding Kye Rowles for a point-blank header that the in-form defender couldn't place in the corner.

However, the visitors were looking the bigger open-play threat, and duly capitalized in the 22nd minute. Saint-Maximin's threat on the dribble worried United initially, but João Peglow's timely intervention broke up a promising attack.

No one picked up the resulting loose ball though, and Westwood pounced, unleashing a thunderbolt to give Charlotte the lead.

D.C. had a near-perfect reply three minutes later, with Peglow feeding Munteanu in behind Charlotte's defense in transition. From an angle, the Romania forward tried to roll a shot past Kristijan Kahlina, but was denied by the goalkeeper's trailing left foot.

Johnson had to make a spectacular reflex stop in the 37th minute to deny Abada, while United largely threatened through Munteanu. One attempt to poke home a chipped pass from Tai Baribo floated high, while his attempt to bend home a goal-of-the-week candidate in the 42nd minute missed the top corner by mere inches.

United needed a pick-me-up, and got it seconds into the second half. Former DCU defender David Schnegg was booked for a challenge near the endline. United conceded twice from dead balls the last time they met Charlotte, and got a measure of revenge as Keisuke Kurokawa's inswinger found Bartlett for an authoritative finish ahead of Kahlina's punch attempt.

United came inches from taking the lead twice in the next five minutes. Munteanu's glancing near-post header beat Kahlina only to float wide, while Baribo clipped the bar with a shot on the turn.

Brandon Servania's long-range strike whistled just over the bar as United were more or less alone in trying to push for a winner.

That meant the next incident of note felt like a sucker-punch for the hosts. Charlotte's initial foray broke down, but United couldn't get to the second ball, and Saint-Maximin collected possession inside the area. From there, the ex-Newcastle winger was ruthless, dipping his shoulder to slash by Bartlett before squeezing a low shot past Johnson.

Munteanu thought he had a spectacular 75th-minute equalizer, but a hard-luck night continued. His falling, powerful strike left Kahlina no chance, hit the bar, and appeared to bounce down over the line. Referee Armando Villarreal briefly paused play as VAR checked, but ultimately the game carried on without a monitor check, much less a goal being awarded.

The brief stoppage brought disappointment for fans at Audi Field, but it also seemed to help Charlotte find their feet after spending long spells on the ropes. United poured what energy they had left into finding an equalizer, but the visitors did enough to frustrate D.C., keeping them at bay.

Substitute Nikola Markovic nearly created a stoppage-time equalizer out of nothing, but his cutback for the seemingly cursed Munteanu ended with a shot rolling cruelly wide of the near post.

Defeat means that United (6-11-8) squandered a chance to gain ground on NYCFC and FC Cincinnati, who at the moment are level in the race for the final Eastern Conference playoff berth on 32 points.

Next up is arguably the most daunting fixture of the 2026 season, a cross-continental flight to for the aforementioned clash with Vancouver, a serious MLS Cup contender. Kickoff from BC Place is scheduled for 10:30 p.m. ET.
