D.C. United secures smash-and-grab 1-1 draw at CF Montreal: Match report
United survived some huge late pressure to claim an eighth draw in 12 MLS matches.
D.C. United's last meeting with CF Montréal ended with late heartbreak, and the Black-and-Red barely avoided a repeat in an eventful 1-1 draw at Stade Saputo on Saturday.
Prince Owusu buried a penalty kick early in the second half to give the hosts the lead, but Tai Baribo nodded home a cross from United debutant Kimito Nono to level the scores. The hosts made a heavy push to claim a late winner, but the Black-and-Red survived the chaos to bring a point back with them.
From kickoff, United was in unfamiliar territory. For the first time all season, starting center backs Lucas Bartlett (suspension) and Kye Rowles (injury) were both unavailable, with Sean Nealis and Matti Peltola paired at the heart of his back four. Further up the field, Kimito Nono made his first appearance in a United shirt, with João Peglow missing out on a start for the first time all season.
Finally, head coach René Weiler (illness) was not present either, with assistant Thomas Binggeli leading the side from the touchline.
Nono showed his speed in getting into position to deny Fabian Herbers in the 8th minute after a Montréal counter, while Louis Munteanu threatened twice in the four minutes that followed.
Sean Johnson was more severely tested in the 17th minute after a slick exchange from Herbers and Noah Streit let Luca Petrasso receive on the overlap. The left back's low cross picked out Owusu in a dangerous spot, but the Ghana striker — who scored a hat trick and added an assist the last time these sides met — was denied by United's no. 1.
The Black-and-Red had a near-miss of their own in the 31st minute. A dead ball went awry initially, but Brandon Servania's hustle kept the play alive. The midfielder's header found Baribo onside and Montréal unprepared, but Baribo's header on the turn went wide.
Johnson produced a kick-save two minutes later as Nealis had to put in an all-or-nothing tackle to prevent Owusu from having a shot on the doorstep, while Hennadii Synchuk volleyed over the bar in the 38th minute as the hosts began to pile up decent opportunities.
United rode their luck to some degree, but that fortunate run expired moments into the second half. Keisuke Kurokawa collided with Brayan Vera as an awkward cross came in from the right. Kurokawa's arms flailed up as he fell, slapping the ball away from the lurking Owusu.
Kurokawa insisted he had been pushed, but referee Pierre-Luc Lauziere — after VAR intervened — pointed to the spot. Owusu made no mistake from the penalty, putting Montréal ahead.
United had offered little, but slowly began offering a bit more penetration on the right. That finally paid off in the 66th minute, with Baribo scoring in his fifth straight MLS fixture.
Some patience in possession allowed Silvan Hefti to get forward, and from the half-space the Swiss defender turned a decent enough pass from Peltola into an audacious heel flick, putting Nono in plenty of space. The ex-Kashima Antlers man fizzed a cross towards the near post, and Baribo won his race with Jalen Neal to head home his 12th goal of the season.

Synchuk cut inside in the 78th minute to fire a shot that took a dangerous deflection, beating Johnson but rolling barely wide as Montréal moved into something of a 4-2-4 formation to chase a much-needed win.
That shift nearly paid an instant dividend, with Montréal creating two excellent chances in the immediate aftermath. First, Owusu clipped a 78th-minute service back into the goalmouth, picking out substitute Daniel Ríos, but the Mexican veteran powered his shot directly at Johnson.
Moments later, a breakdown from United gave the hosts a two-on-two raid on the break. Owusu again looked to get himself an assist, but Synchuk's sliding finish past Johnson rolled wide.
United had to survive late, intense pressure, with Olger Escobar somehow not finding a last-gasp winner. The teenager only came on in the 90th minute, but managed to smash a shot off the foot of the post in stoppage time. Then, with the last touch of the match, his sliding attempt to put the ball into an empty net was foiled by a stumble.
An eighth tie in their last 12 league matches leaves United (5-9-5) in the ninth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. They'll have a chance to gain some ground on a higher-flying side Wednesday, when they host the New England Revolution at Audi Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.
